I almost forgot I was carrying it...the Helios is an excellent choice."

Many people have requested a light and strong mountaineering axe with superior steep ice performance.
Stanley Alpine is filling this need with 2 models of mountaineering axes.

Both models feature a pick that provides deep, secure penetration in snow like a traditional axe,
but also has an aggressive tip that works very well in steep water ice.
All are available in custom lengths at no extra charge.

ALL AXES ARE CUSTOM SIZED JUST FOR YOU!
YOU WANT 67.8cm?  NO PROBLEM!

Our strongest axe. Chrome-moly head with 3-2.5 titanium alloy shaft.
This axe provides really good performance on steep water ice.
Available with or without steel end spike. $189

Best strength to weight ratio. 6-4 Ti alloy head with 3-2.5 Ti alloy shaft.
Though it is the same shape as the steel head, it does not perform as well on
hard water ice, due to less mass at the head.  The Ti head now has a
bottle opener built into the adze for your favorite tasty beverages.
Available with or without Ti or steel end spike. $239

What does it weigh?

helios2.JPG (84081 bytes)It depends on the options you choose!

A steel head weighs 191 grams and adds 2.5 cm to the total length
A Ti head weighs 108 grams and adds 2.5 cm to the total length
A Ti shaft weighs 4 grams per cm
An Al shaft weighs 3.4 grams per cm
A Ti spike weighs 17 grams and adds 3.8 cm to the total length
A steel spike weighs 36 grams and adds 3.8 cm to the total length

So: if you want a 65 cm axe with Ti head and a Ti shaft with no spike,
the shaft will be 65 - 2.5 = 62.5 cm.
The total weight will be 108 + (62.5 x 4) = 358 grams
THAT'S LIGHT, MY FRIENDS!  Light is fast: light is right!

ONLY AXES WITH ALUMINUM HEADS ARE LIGHTER!
TRUST ME- YOU DON'T WANT AN ALUMINUM HEAD!
