HELIOS Mountaineering Axes by STANLEY ALPINE

"Well balanced, sturdy, and carries as if filled with helium...I almost forgot I was carrying it...the Helios is an excellent choice."

 - Climbing Magazine, December, 2002

Many people have requested a light and strong mountaineering axe with superior steep ice performance. Stanley Alpine is filling this need with 2 models of mountaineering axes.  (Helios Ultra coming soon).

Both models feature a pick that provides deep, secure penetration in snow like a traditional axe, but also has an aggressive tip that works very well in steep water ice. All are available in custom lengths at no extra charge.

WE SET OUT TO BUILD THE WORLD'S BEST AXE.
WE BELIEVE WE SUCCEEDED.
There are now several other Titanium axes out there.  MAKE NO MISTAKE:
THE STANLEY ALPINE HELIOS is:
STILL THE LIGHTEST,
STILL THE ONLY ONE WITH CUSTOM LENGTHS,
STILL THE LOWEST COST, and
STILL THE BEST.

ALL AXES ARE CUSTOM SIZED JUST FOR YOU!   YOU WANT 67.8cm?  NO PROBLEM!

STEEL HEAD with TITANIUM SHAFT

Our strongest axe. Chrome moly head with 3-2.5 titanium alloy shaft. This axe provides really good performance on steep water ice. Available with or without steel end spike. $169

TITANIUM HEAD with TITANIUM SHAFT

Best strength to weight ratio. 6-4 Ti alloy head with 3-2.5 Ti alloy shaft. Though it is the same shape as the steel head, it does not perform as well on hard water ice, due to less mass at the head.  The Ti head now has a bottle opener built into the adze for your favorite tasty beverages.  Available with or without Ti or steel end spike. $209

What does it weigh?

helios2.JPG (84081 bytes)It depends on the options you choose!

A steel head weighs 191 grams and adds 2.5 cm to the total length
A Ti head weighs 108 grams and adds 2.5 cm to the total length
A Ti shaft weighs 4 grams per cm
An Al shaft weighs 3.4 grams per cm
A Ti spike weighs 17 grams and adds 3.8 cm to the total length
A steel spike weighs 36 grams and adds 3.8 cm to the total length

So: if you want a 65 cm axe with Ti head and a Ti shaft with no spike, the shaft will be 65 - 2.5 = 62.5 cm.  The total weight will be 108 + (62.5 x 4) = 358 grams
THAT'S LIGHT, MY FRIENDS!  Light is fast: light is right!

ONLY AXES WITH ALUMINUM HEADS ARE LIGHTER! TRUST ME- YOU DON'T WANT AN ALUMINUM HEAD!

How does it compare to the USHBA Ti axe?

The Stanley Alpine Helios is a bit lighter, for a given length.

They both use similar alloys in both the head and the shaft.

The Ushba pick is a bit more aggressive than most axes.  The Helios uses an even more aggressive point like a waterfall tool pick for better performance on steep, hard ice.

The Ushba shaft is larger in diameter than the Helios shaft.

The Ushba head is thinner.  Stanley Alpine chooses to use a lighter shaft and a heavier, stiffer head to maximize steep ice performance.

The Ushba axe is a fully welded design.  The Helios axe uses pins.

The Ushba axe is made in the former Soviet Union.  The Helios is 100% made in USA.  Even the titanium is milled in Detroit.

The Helios axe is available in custom lengths at no extra charge.  The USHBA axe is not.
